The intimate practices of \u201c<em>Domus<\/em>\u201d (Italian), \u201c<em>Mishpacha<\/em>\u201d (Russian-Hebrew), \u201c<em>Oikogeneia<\/em>\u201d (Greek), \u201c<em>Familia<\/em>\u201d (Mexican) circumscribed the daily lives of real people. Immigrants and emigrants all arrived on the West Side from distant places of origin for reasons of abuse in the homeland or perhaps economic and social stagnation. West Side residents were disposed to suspicion even cynicism towards officialdom and noblesse-oblige charitable institutions functioning beyond their primary trust.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maxwellhalsted.uic.edu\/files\/2017\/08\/879-THE-CHARITY-BUSINESS-Puck-illus-975x1024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/maxwellhalsted.uic.edu\/files\/2017\/08\/879-THE-CHARITY-BUSINESS-Puck-illus-975x1024.jpg\" width=\"694\" height=\"729\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jane Addams, for instance, was a generous benefactor to the girl Hilda Satt\u2019s welfare. \u00a0Nevertheless, \u00a0the needs of\u00a0Hilda&#8217;s Yiddish speaking mother with whom she often saw things differently and disagreed invariably came as Hilda&#8217;s first priority. After twenty years in the neighborhood, peddling wares on the streets, Hilda&#8217;s mother never did learn English. The expresssive richness of idiomatic Yiddish was the family language. English functioned, to the extent required, as the public language in a relatively impersonal civil society.<\/p>\n<p>Despite emotional burdens, sibling jealousies, and generational rivalries, family relationships and family memories persisted in a way friendships and relationships circumscribed by discrete events could not. In his long running feature articles on the West Side slum and ghetto for the <em>Daily Chicago Tribune<\/em>, Elias Tobenkin focused on the inclusive\u00a0activities of the immigrant family and the variety of separate directions taken by each of its individual members.<\/p>\n<p>Three years prior to his published Ph.D dissertation on <em>The Ghetto<\/em> at the University of Chicago, Louis Wirth submitted\u00a0an unpublished Master&#8217;s thesis on &#8220;The Cultural Conflicts in the Immigrant Family&#8221; (1925). \u00a0Among his conclusions: &#8220;Every intimate family group has a culture all its own which cannot be fully appreciated, understood, and shared by an outsider.&#8221; bjb<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maxwellhalsted.uic.edu\/files\/2017\/08\/893-HOME-SWEET-HOME-Life-illus-743x1024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/maxwellhalsted.uic.edu\/files\/2017\/08\/893-HOME-SWEET-HOME-Life-illus-743x1024.jpg\" width=\"498\" height=\"686\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>FROM ANN\u2019S KITCHEN\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/maxwellhalsted.uic.edu\/files\/2016\/05\/4019.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13277\" src=\"https:\/\/maxwellhalsted.uic.edu\/files\/2016\/05\/4019-300x230.jpg\" width=\"460\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maxwellhalsted.uic.edu\/files\/2016\/05\/4019-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maxwellhalsted.uic.edu\/files\/2016\/05\/4019.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAnne Sorrentino was born and grew up Italian on Chicago\u2019s West Side and wrote about her formative years. Her memories of primary family were reinforced by the pleasures of ethnic foodways served at family meals.
