Well-traveled roads, as the Midwestern writer Hamlin Garland&#8217;s described it, rolled into and out of Chicago, connected to destinations west, east, south, and north. The walking proximity of the train stations made West-side streets into portals for recent arrivals seeking to better their\u00a0fortunes. The rapidly expanding industrial city located in the middle of the nation in 1900 offered multiple opportunities to leave behind stagnant economies and political oppression, with the promise of work for a living.<\/p>\n<p>The population of the city doubled between 1880 and 1890 when Chicago became the second U.S. city to surpass one million. By 1900 the population had increased another sixty percent.
